Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu ocala floridaThe Shih Tzu is an alert, lively, little dog. It is happy and hardy, and packed with character.

This dog is sturdy with a body that is just slightly longer that it is taller.

They are playful, spunky, affectionate and love to be with people.  Generally good with other pets.  Can be difficult to house break.

Since it is so adorable and full of character, the Shih Tzu can develop behavioral issues if left to run the household.  If not given an environment with consistency in training and a firm hand you could find them snapping, biting, barking and the usual small dog syndrome characteristics.  “I’m The Boss Around Here” kind of attitude.  Not to worry, just make them listen and you are good to go.

We as humans and care takers, can create a undisciplined dog and wonder what went wrong.  It is what we do or don’t do while training the that creates undesirable  behavior.

Firm, stable, consistent leadership is what any dog is looking for.  When we provide that they grow up to be a content well balanced canine good citizen.

Height: Up to 11 inches (28 cm)

Prone to slipped stifle and spinal disc disease caused by a long back and short legs. Also ear infections, eye problems such as cherry eye and early tooth loss. Tends to wheeze and snore and can have respiratory problems. These dogs gain weight easily and should not be overfed.  They do not do well in the heat.

Life Expectancy

The Shih Tzu should live 15 years.

These little dogs require a good daily grooming using a bristle brush. When kept in a long coat a topknot is usually tied to keep the hair out of the dog’s eyes. Keeping them trimmed makes the coat easier and less time-consuming to care for. The ear passages and area around the eyes clean should be cleaned frequently.

Their eyes are sensitive and there are special drops you can buy to put in them if needed. Ask your vet what to use on your dog.

This breed sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers if its coat is kept very well groomed.

The Shih Tzu requires a little more maintenance with daily brushing or keeping them clipped.  Spunky, loving and generally willing with a bit of a stubborn streak.  They need moderate exercise to help with maintaining a good attitude.
