Yorkie Poos are a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle.
This particular hybrid cross has been around for quite some time. It has become a favorite “Designer Breed” for the following reasons,
- hypoallergenic
- easy to train and willingness to learn
- generally quiet and not given to unnecessary barkingease of grooming
- very few health issues
- their fun loving attitude
- medium energy and ability to live in smaller spaces
- small in size
- ease of grooming
I was raising Yorkie Poos before they were called a “Designer Breed”.
The reason I liked this particular cross was because they were great for a first time dog owner.
I remember going to a clients home who had just purchased one of our little Yorkie Poos.
She had never had a dog before.
I always gave people information on how to train their new pup and in this case I went to the home to see that they were going to be set up for success.
This is her picture and her pup is now 10 years old. She followed the instructions and they got along famously.

It has been my experience that people want a dog that is easy to live with and train, but still fun.
Husbands who didn’t want to have anything to do with their wife buying a Yorkie Poo, have called me later to tell me how much fun they were having with their new pup.
They wanted a “man’s dog” and a Yorkie Poo was the perfect fit.
Yorkie Poos are versatile.
They love exploring, but always look to see where you are.
Husbands can take them hunting (don’t laugh, it has been done) and wives can have them on their lap.
Yorkie poos love kids, pets and in general, they love life.
Here are some general characteristics of a Yorkie Poo
Color
Black is the predominent gene when crossing a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle. If you breed second generation or F2 crosses (yorkie poo to poodle), then you are more apt to get a fuller coat and a black and tan color.
Personality
Over the years I have found that their disposition is very consistent. One pup might have a bit more energy than the other, but they are generally easy going and happy. Some might have more of a prey drive or hunting instinct. This could make them dig or use their nose more to find things or actually hunt.
They can be fearless and jump off the furniture without warning so they need to be watched as pups.
Size
Since they can be breed with a toy or miniature poodle, their size can range anywhere from 10-14 inches in height and 6-12 lbs in weight. Usually they are in the middle, around the 7-8 lb range.
Coat
This is a variable that ranges from wavy like a poodle to wispy and fine like a Yorkie. If they are the first generation or F1, it is more unpredictable. The F2 breeding of a Yorkie Poo to a poodle or Yorkie Poo to Yorkie Poo, will have a full coat that won’t be so likely to resemble the Yorkie.
In summary, the Yorkie Poo is a dog who loves life, is small, generally quiet, often black in color and can have varying types of hypoallergenic coats.
